太陽電池組件的輸出是隨太陽輻射強度和太陽電池組件自身溫度(芯片溫度)而變化的。另外由于太陽電池組件具有電壓隨電流增大而下降的特性，因此存在能獲取大功率的佳工作點。太陽輻射強度是變化著的，顯然佳工作點也是在變化的。相對于這些變化，始終讓太陽電池組件的工作點處于大功率點，系統始終從太陽電池組件獲取大功率輸出，這種控制就是大功率跟蹤控制。太陽能發電系統用的逆變器的大特點就是包括了大功率點跟蹤(MPPT)這一功能。

早晨日出后，太陽輻射強度逐漸增強，太陽電池的輸出也隨之增大，當達到逆變器工作所需的輸出功率后，逆變器即自動開始運行。進入運行后，逆變器便時時刻刻監視太陽電池組件的輸出，只要太陽電池組件的輸出功率大于逆變器工作所需的輸出功率，逆變器就持續運行;直到日落停機，即使陰雨天逆變器也能運行。當太陽電池組件輸出變小，逆變器輸出接近0時，逆變器便形成待機狀態。
